TRUBKA – Former Ukrainian Zabava band from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (now enjoying musical retirement from playing live gigs) was formed in 1987. Trubka band has 2 albums available for download/stream. The first album “Beginnings” (Pochatok) was recorded in 1991, and the second “West” (Zakhid) in 1998.
In the beginning, three young amateur musicians from Vegreville & Lamont, Alberta were brought together by a common thread... the love to play & perform Ukrainian music. From playing & practicing as individuals in the basements of their childhood homes; to forming a band and performing together as a trio on stages across north east central Alberta... and beyond.
In 1987, a polka power trio, comprising of Ralph Sorochan, Jodie Wacko, and Tim Zaharichuk, formed Trubka. Initially they travelled extensively as instrumentalists for the song and dance troupe "The Flying Kozaks". A January 1988 Flying Kozaks performance in Regina, Sask. saw Trubka emerge as an independent entity. The band played the Malanka Celebration & Dance following that show. The next few years consisted of Trubka band trio playing at many Ukrainian Weddings, Zabavas, and at the annual Vegreville Ukrainian Pysanka Festival.
In the Spring of 1991, Trubka recorded & mixed some traditional & contemporary Ukrainian songs, and in July 1991 released their first album entitled, "Beginnings" (Pochatky). It was a TRUBKA Centenary Project Commemorating the One Hundredth Anniversary of Ukrainian Immigration to Canada 1891-1991.
In August 1991, Trubka had the opportunity to "transform" and add another musician to the band mix. In order to add to & expand their musical repertoire of Ukrainian & Contemporary songs, a young fellow by the name of Johnny Moroz, from Edmonton, Alberta, joined Trubka. He added his guitar playing and vocals to the sound that had started as a trio back in 1987. It was a great new addition to the band, and he fit right in with the original 3.
After being one of the original 3 members of TRUBKA, and playing gigs with the band from 1987 to 1996, Tim Zaharichuk (keyboards, vocals) decided to leave the band. In the summer of 1996, a young musician named, Clint Moroziuk, originally from Mundare, Alberta, joined Trubka. He not only added his vocals & keys, but, another musical dimension was infused into the band with his guitar playing; the band now had 2 guitar players. In 1998, with this new lineup, the band recorded & released their 2nd album entitled "Zakhid - West". Clint continued playing with Trubka (Ralph, Jodie, & Johnny) until the band "retired" from playing live gigs in 2002.
It was a privilege & honour to play at all the various functions & events all over Canada & the USA, over the 15 years from 1987 until the band TRUBKA went on a “permanent vacation” in 2002...
